Close-up photographs of the Whitby West pier extensions.
Whitby's pier extensions have withstood repeated onslaughts of the worst the North Sea could throw. They've also been witness to many a drama both on their soft wooden decks, and in the waters next to them. The stories they could tell! As a child I spent hour after hour sat on the top deck watching the tip of my fishing rod with excitement, and I can remember so very clearly what the wood felt like. It always felt warm, even when the weather was cold - keeping me safely away from the cold below. And the wonderful smell of the wood and the tar when the sun came out. But I was petrified of the dreaded gaps only a few years earlier in my life!
