First Hybrid Taxi for Whitby!

Whitby based taxi firm Whitby Cabs has added an eco-friendlier taxi to its fleet.
The Toyota vehicle uses hybrid technology rather than the usual diesel engine vehicles resulting in significant fuel
efficiency and greatly reducing emissions of CO2 gasses and harmful particulates.

Whitby Cabs owner, Stuart Goodier says “It’s great to know that we can carry our passengers in a
quiet, smooth vehicle and greatly reduce our impact on the environment as we do so. Customers like
that by choosing our car, they’re reducing their carbon footprint as well. Many of our customers seek
us out, even if our cab is towards the back of the rank at the time”.

The technology employs a small efficient petrol engine to charge the vehicles batteries, which in turn
drives an electric motor. Additional charging is obtained from the effect of ‘regenerative braking’. As the
car no longer needs to apply power to the wheels it allows the spinning wheels to power the
vehicle’s generator, storing it in the battery for later use.

Stuart went on to say “one of the things I love about living and working in Whitby is the fresh sea air
and it’s nice to know we’re doing our little bit to preserve it. The efficiency is of course good for
business as well, so it’s a win-win. We intend to replace all our vehicles as soon as practicable”.
