The BFI was founded in 1933. They are a charity governed by a Royal Charter. They combine cultural, creative and industrial roles, bringing together the BFI National Archive and BFI Reuben Library, film distribution, exhibition and education at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX, publishing and festivals.
Part of the BFI is a fantastic website offering access to their archive - and an easy way to find films relating to a specific region is by using their 'Britain on film map'. At the time of writing, the map shows 33 different films of Whitby and the Whitby area dating back to 1913. They're all extremely interesting and well worth a look if you have an interest in the relatively recent history of Whitby.
